Summer Solstice and the Herbs That Make It Feel Like Magic

Okay can we just take a moment to appreciate the Summer Solstice? The longest day of the year. The sun at its absolute peak. Herbs flourishing, flowers blooming, and the whole earth basically showing off. I am here for all of it.
As an herbalist, the summer solstice is one of my favorite moments in the entire year. It feels like nature is saying "look at everything I made for you." And I genuinely cannot help but feel grateful every. single. time.
But here is the thing about the solstice that I find really beautiful... Even at the height of all that light and abundance, this day also marks the moment when the sun begins its slow journey back toward darkness. It is a gentle reminder that even in our most expansive seasons, balance is always part of the picture. Growth and rest. Light and stillness. Both are necessary and beautifully sacred.
For those of us living with chronic illness, EDS, POTS, MCAS, or chronic fatigue, summer can feel like a complicated season. The heat is real. The energy demands are real. And sometimes "embracing the season" looks a lot more like surviving it than thriving in it. That is okay too. That is exactly why I love leaning on herbs this time of year. They help us find our version of summer, whatever that looks like.
So let me introduce you to some of my absolute favorite Summer Solstice Herbs:

Rose
If there is one herb that was made for midsummer, it is Rose. She blooms fully under the sun, she smells incredible, and she brings this soft, heart opening energy that I honestly think we all need a little more of.
Rose is cooling, uplifting, and deeply nourishing for the heart and emotions. On a hot, overstimulating summer day she is like a deep exhale. Add rose petals to iced teas, lemonade, herbal infusions, or a bath ritual and just let her do her thing.

Lemon Balm
Lemon balm is just pure summer joy in plant form. Bright, citrusy, cheerful. She supports the nervous system while gently lifting your spirits, and she does it without making you drowsy which is a win when you still have things to do.
If the heat and busyness of summer leaves you feeling frazzled (and honestly, same), lemon balm is your herb. She is especially wonderful as an iced tea on a hot afternoon.

Hibiscus
A pitcher of iced hibiscus tea on a hot day is genuinely one of life's great pleasures. That vibrant ruby color, that tart refreshing flavor. She is beautiful and she works hard.
Hibiscus supports hydration and healthy circulation, which makes her especially helpful for those of us managing POTS in the summer heat. Brew a big batch, refrigerate it, and sip throughout the day. You are welcome.

Lavender
Summer is wonderful and also sometimes a lot. Lavender is my reminder to slow down and breathe. She supports relaxation, sleep, and nervous system regulation in the most gentle and beautiful way.
A cup of lavender tea at sunset or a few drops in your diffuser as the day winds down is such a simple and lovely way to transition from the activity of summer into the quiet of evening.

Peppermint
Peppermint is honestly my summer survival herb. When the heat is doing too much, peppermint steps in and cools everything down. She supports digestion, eases tension headaches, and just makes you feel instantly more refreshed.
She pairs beautifully with hibiscus and lemon balm for a summer tea blend that is both nourishing and genuinely delicious.

Holy Basil (Tulsi)
Summer often brings a lot with it. Travel, gatherings, busy schedules, higher demands on our energy. Tulsi is the herb I reach for when I need help navigating all of that with a little more grace and a little less overwhelm.
She is an adaptogen, which means she helps your body respond to stress more gently, and she brings this grounding, clarifying energy that I find really supportive during the more intense weeks of summer.

A Summer Solstice Tea Ritual
One of my favorite ways to honor the solstice is to make a simple herbal tea and spend a few quiet minutes outside with it. No phone. No agenda. Just you, your tea, and the longest day of the year.
Summer Solstice Tea Blend
1 part rose petals
1 part lemon balm
1 part hibiscus
1/2 part lavender
1/2 part peppermint
Steep 1 tablespoon in 8 to 10 ounces of hot water for 10 to 15 minutes. Enjoy warm as the sun rises or chill and serve over ice during the heat of the afternoon. Either way, let it be a moment just for you.
While you are sipping, maybe sit with a few of these questions:
What has blossomed in your life this year?
What are you ready to celebrate?
What brings you genuine joy right now?
Where do you need a little more balance and rest?

The Summer Solstice is a beautiful reminder that we are part of nature's rhythm too. Some seasons of life are full of growth and expansion. Others call for healing, reflection, and rest. Both are valid and completely necessary.
Whether you are celebrating with a bonfire, tending your garden, gathering with people you love, or simply enjoying a quiet cup of tea on your porch, I hope this solstice brings you something that feels really good.
Honor the light around you and the light that lives inside you. Happy Summer Solstice!!
